Age of Empires Definitive Edition: Faithful to a fault::
I adore the Age of Empires video game series. I was therefore thrilled to hear that Microsoft was developing a Definitive Edition of the original Age of Empires. However, there is a problem with remembering older games: occasionally, they are confused with later releases in the series.
With Age of Empires Definitive Edition, boy, did I learn that the hard way. My love for Age of Empires II: Age of Kings (and beyond) has grown significantly since the original game, as evidenced by this particular Definitive Edition. The original Age of Empires game is not at all bad. However, Age of Empires II built on the strengths of that first game to create an even better strategy series.
I laughed at the thought of playing a tutorial when I first started Definitive Edition. I mean, I’ve played countless hours of Age of Empires games, mastered Command & Conquer Generals, and racked up way too many Company of Heroes game hours. Veteran of real-time strategy, he wasn’t about to put them on. But after repeatedly humiliating myself on the opening mission of the “Glory of Greece” campaign, I quickly found myself playing the tutorial.
I had always thought that the original Age of Empires was where my tendencies to be a turtling came from. I was the type of player who preferred to first set up a base and obtain all the necessary upgrades before considering assembling an army and engaging the opposition. After being humbled in the first Age of Empires mission, Claiming Territory, which has been oddly renamed Land Grab, I’m not sure where my fondness for turtles originated. If that was my first impression, it most definitely wasn’t derived from Age of Empires.
For those who are unaware, your first “real” task in Age of Empires is to construct five farms and destroy the farms of a nearby empire. That presents a challenge because it essentially means that a nearby budding empire must be destroyed. You’ll be attacked in the first few minutes, and your forces will have significantly decreased, which is the catch that wasn’t mentioned in that setup that seemed so simple. Okay, I guess I shouldn’t have built my base there. I looked for a better place to call home in later playthroughs. Every time I did that, the empire I was supposed to be overthrowing aggressively pursued me (and occasionally, a smaller foe I happened to come across).
